jPeople is a utility web application developed by the IRC to make finding people a better experience. Previously, this information was only partly available in StudentPix, which had to be updated manually. jPeople aims to integrate with existing information by accessing all relevant data from campusnet (in)directly.
jPeople's data is protected in multiple layers: Neither the application, nor its data are accessible outside the (vpn extended) university network. More information can be found within the applications info section.
jPeople can be found on our web 2.0 server.
More importantly, jPeople can be integrated on your own web site - but will maintain it's restriction to viewers within the university network. Simply place the following html snippet on your web site:
jPeople is sourced (in)directly from CampusNet via the Active Directory. The following data is used:
- Department: This relates to the 'cost number' entry in active directory entry and got 'translated' from a number to a meaningful name by the cost number list that Mark Jahnke has kindly exported out of our Budget System (OBI).
- Phone Location: This relates to the phone number list maintained by Hermann Bischoff. Obviously this will only work as long as numbers are fixed to locations - which might change soon.
- Images: This data is exported daily from CampusNet, which implicetly means that only student images are automatically integrated. Both staff and students have the option to not display an image or use an(other) image (instead). This is then saved locally on our webserver. To fulfill their daily duties in emergency situations, college masters additionally have the permission to view any CampusNet image regardless of the students previous decision - similar to the current permission settings in CampusNet itself.
- Every other data comes from CampusNet directly and can be modified by the user him/her self, the registrar or the personnel department respectively.
